Empowering Women Through Sustainable Livelihoods in Sri Lanka

As part of the Karuna Seva initiative, Threads of Renewal was launched to empower rural women in Sri Lanka through skill development, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunity.

A hands-on training workshop introduced participants to the art of upcycling gently used sarees into contemporary clothing. Along with sewing techniques, the workshop emphasized creative design and product development, encouraging participants to create garments that appeal to international markets and generate higher income.

Held in the aftermath of a devastating cyclone that affected many communities across the island, the workshop became more than a skill-building program. It offered hope, resilience, and a practical pathway for women to rebuild their livelihoods while transforming donated textiles into valuable products.

The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development (CORD), which identified and selected motivated women from three regions of Sri Lanka. Participants were chosen based on their existing skills, commitment, and potential to build sustainable livelihoods.

The training was facilitated on behalf of Karuna Seva by Andrea Dedoti and Aruni Weerasinghe.

Project Update

Following the workshop, the participants successfully created approximately 25 handcrafted garments, including dresses and tops, using upcycled sarees.

These garments are being showcased at an international gathering organized by CORD, providing an opportunity to introduce the initiative to a global audience while generating income that will directly support the participating women and help sustain the project.
